The interview: the peace in the hectic life of Kim and Jaap

We visit Kim at her home for a conversation about her interior style and the thought process behind the color choices made and the combination with striking wallpaper from Poespas. The family lives in Loosdrecht, where the house borders the green edge of the Loosdrechtse Plassen. "This house is completely different from the previous house. The previous house had a lot of wood and a lot more color; green and red and such. But here everything is different, really what suits the house."

We wanted a different color in every room, except downstairs

Can you tell us a bit about where you start with a new home? How did you come to these choices?

The interior is completely inspired by nature outside the house. The view flows seamlessly into the colours, shapes and styles inside. There are many colours from nature to be found in the house; green, brown and pink tones. "We wanted a different colour in every room, except downstairs. There we wanted a bit more peace; but absolutely no white."

"We chose the wallpaper first." Kim loves wallpaper and of course also has her own clothing and wallpaper brand Poespas. "And with that wallpaper I looked for your LAB COLOURS. In fact, sometimes we adjusted the colours in the wallpaper." Kim put the LAB Colour Fan next to the chosen wallpaper and looked at how she could perfectly adjust the wallpaper to the chosen colours. "We really brought back your colours in there, so that it becomes one whole again. Most of it was fixed, but adjustments were made in the small details of the wallpaper." And that worked out exceptionally well.

Kim would have loved to paint the house largely in Oriental Ecru no. 434. "But that would be too green." That's why she chose Fluffy Cheetah no. 255 as the base for the entire house. You'll find this colour on the entire ground floor and continue her way up the stairs via the hall. This soft and cuddly shade is a delicate neutral that hugs the space. And you can feel it.

Can you tell us something about the style of your interior and how you came to this choice?

Kim and Jaap designed the spaces with an architect. They thought very carefully about the incidence of light and the shapes of the different spaces. Both Kim and Jaap had a lot of trouble seeing through things at the beginning. "The architect built everything based on the view. The extension, that view through the hall, the incidence of light in the bathroom. The architect thought of all that, because this was really a very ugly, strange house."

"We also had an interior designer. She is very technical, and therefore thought a lot about the materials and, for example, the recurring round shapes everywhere. I am quite outspoken about what I want, but she really brought that together. In terms of beauty, I can still come a long way myself, but she really came up with the idea of those curves that are recurring everywhere."

"I've been thinking a lot about where a lot of filming is done, where a lot of photography is done. What is the incidence of light? What does that do?" Kim indicates that her work has been very important in making interior choices. "Like for example upstairs in the walk-in closet, I knew I would record a lot of content for Poespas. What is my background, which paint looks good on screen. I think Jaap doesn't know that at all and that he really thinks; you're completely crazy. But he is very happy afterwards, I know that."

Have you had any discussions with each other?

"Jaap likes everything. He knows: Kim's style is my style. He even likes pink. He also likes Nigiri no. 286 in the laundry room."

And what makes the house really Kim and Jaap's?

"The house becomes personal because of the distinctive wallpapers. Large paintings, faces; that suits us. Furthermore, each room also has a rug, cushions, blankets and scented candles. That is really our thing and that is what I always get back from people. And the candy cupboard. Yes, everyone knows where to find that."

Where do you get your inspiration for your interior?

Kim gets her inspiration from Pinterest and "a hundred thousand books". She has also worked with people who know about it. "I can think I know all that and come up with my mood board, but they still come up with completely different ideas. That's great."

"That was also the case with you." Kim says that she had already chosen LAB COLOURS in advance, but that one of the colour experts from LAB PAINT immediately said that those colours would not come across on location as Kim had imagined. "She then comes up with slightly different shades. That makes it so nice when you come by here."

How important do you think sustainability is when furnishing your home?

"Yes, the house is very sustainable. We opted for a lot of solar panels and a heat pump." In addition, the entire house was painted in LAB PAINT. Not an average paint brand, but a high-quality, sustainable paint label from the Netherlands with a unique color collection.

In terms of furniture, it's a different story. The new residents of the old house took over the entire contents, so all the furniture in the new house is new. That does mean that everything fits in with this house and a possible new resident can take everything over again.

Do you have a favorite spot in your house?

"Yes, the office. Look at that view from there. And you can see the house. I really like looking at the house. I don't know... I really like the wallpaper there, I feel very comfortable there. And Jaap too. It's a very homely office." The office also features a perfect match between paint color and wallpaper, namely the LAB COLOUR Saint-Tropez no. 460 and the Botanical Blossom wallpaper by Poespas. Saint-Tropez no. 460 ensures that Kim and Jaap's faces come across well on screen. Not too green and not too red. "I also got calls every time: You're not putting color on the ceiling, are you?" "Yes, you are!" "Did you really think about how the color would look on video for you?" "Yes!" They laughed really hard, but hey, it's my job."

Jaap hurries through the living room, looking for his sports gear. "Jaap, what's your favorite place in the house?" Jaap: "The hallway, I think it's really cool." The hallway is a real eye-catcher. The golden yellow wine-red Silent Cinnamon no. 25 warms up this "'long hospital corridor'", as they called it at the start. "That was actually the only thing I found exciting when it went on the wall. I think everything turned out really cool. We're really super happy."

Do you have any tips for creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere in your home?

1. "Paint the ceiling. Absolutely no white."

2. "And also take the skirting boards, we got that from you too. It flows so nicely and that really makes a difference. If you imagine that in white, it immediately becomes much busier and louder, and therefore less cozy."

3. "And wallpaper. I think wallpaper is really art. It immediately makes it cozy, and that's not because I make it myself. I've always liked wallpaper."

4. "Rugs. I have rugs everywhere. Even in the children's bedrooms. I'm such a fan of them. The children are always lying on them making figures."

5. "Plants. The plants were really the finishing touch and I saved them until last, because I wanted to make sure the bench was in the right place, so that a tree could be placed there, for example."

Have you ever made a bad color choice? If so, what color was it and what did you learn from it?

Colors can always turn out differently than expected. No matter how certain you are that a color will look great, it can still turn out differently on location. "The back entrance was supposed to be Nigiri no. 286, but we changed it to Velvet Fudge no. 380, because Nigiri suddenly looked bright pink here. And Nigiri is just beautiful in the laundry room."
